Tattoo Design for David
Geometry/Blackwork
POSITION: Back and Arms
DESCRIPTION: David first reached out in 2015, shortly after my move from Germany to Los Angeles, California. He was looking for an artist who specialized in geometric and blackwork tattoos. For his first concept, he wanted to get a large-scale geometric back piece. We started with the upper half of his back, incorporating a Metatron’s Cube, fractal patterns, and bold blackwork elements. The mathematical structure and symmetry of these forms felt like a natural fit, reflecting David’s calm, analytical nature and his professional background as a professor in the sciences.

In 2016, he returned to expand the tattoo even further. For this next stage, we added large, V-shaped blackwork elements and a sequence of Platonic solids running down his spine to accentuate the flow of his anatomy. We extended the theme across both shoulders, maintaining consistency with the original design language. To break the strict symmetry and build visual interest and variety, we incorporated negative space into one of his shoulders—mirroring the hexagonal patterns from the rest of the piece, but creating contrast with the solid black elements of the other shoulder.
In 2024, nearly a decade later, David decided to add even more work to the project and expand the geometric design to both of his arms. We stayed true to the original concept, continuing the interplay of positive and negative space with a balance of blackwork and precise geometric elements, perfectly integrating the new work with the existing composition.
Seeing David again after all these years was such an amazing experinece. We instantly connected and bonded over music, deep conversation, and that understated, exquisite sense of humor that only fellow introverts can relate to and understand ;)
